I was thinking of that old saying, “Children should be seen and not heard.” And ” Never contradict your elders,” a hard-and-fast rule in our parents’ day.

Yes, and not always a bad rule. I learned, as I entered my teens, that I could ask just about anything as long as it was done with respect. Arguing and contradicting? No. But as time went on, debate was okay. You had to earn the right to disagree, I think.
